BAINBRIDGE LEADS AFTER A DAY OF CHALLENGING CONDITIONS
One hundred kiters from 28 nations were very eager to start the 2021 season today in Gizzeria, Italy, at the Hang Loose Beach Club for the first Act of the 2021 KiteFoil World Series. The energy was high since the morning, and as soon as the wind picked up the competitors where ready to launch their kites. KITEFOIL WORLD SERIES 2021 KICKS OFF FROM GIZZERIA
They’re back. After a long, forced, leap year, the kiters and the KiteFoil World Series are back for a full season. The first event of the year kicks off tomorrow, June 8th, in Gizzeria, Italy, at Hang Loose Beach Club, a very appreciated spot among kiters around Europe. The sea breeze blew consistently all afternoon from north-west with flat water, for the fun of the many athletes who tested the racecourse today, eager to get their boards flying. The Grand Finale
Gran Canaria proved to be the premium location for European December sailing once again today, with a perfect 16-20 knot breeze pumping through for the final day of racing. Theo de Ramecourt (FRA) secured the overall win in the open division, with Ellie Aldridge (GBR) taking out the Womens title and Arthur Lhez (FRA) crowned the Under 19 Champion. Swings and Roundabouts
With a slightly cloudy morning, there were a few worried faces around the rigging area, but the confident words from the locals proved correct, with the clouds blowing away and a perfect 16-20 knot gradient breeze blowing through, with the orange flag being displayed at 1105 local time. The benchmark in this regatta so far has been Theo de Ramecourt (FRA), whose base strategy has been to focus on his own performance rather than worrying about other riders. Here comes the Youth
“Today is perfect,” commented Markus Schwendtner, Class Manager of the IKA, as the riders launched their 11m kites into the warm trade winds as they head out for a day of epic racing here at the stunning location of Playa de las Burras in Gran Canaria, Spain. Big Thursday
Today was certainly filled with excitement here at the final event of the kiteboarding calendar, with the action starting even before the first warning signal, the strong winds combined with a launching area in the lee of the peninsula causing a stressful environment as riders struggled to launch and get out to the clear winds. This caused a slight delay in the start, with the first race getting away with a clear start 20 mins behind schedule, at 1120 local time. Ending the most difficult year of international sports on a high, all signs are pointing to an amazing event coming up here in the Canary Islands over the coming days. COVID-19 has made it very difficult for the global community, and international competition has not been exempt.
